Southampton, UK.- The Southampton Solent University Concourse Gallery is currently showing "Peter Jarvis: A Point of View" on display until January 7th 2012. The exhibition presents historic architecture and intimate scenic studies from in and around Southampton. Artist and Solent University lecturer, Peter Jarvis, has taken a keen interest in buildings and landscape since writing his dissertation on JMW Turner at Ravensbourne College of Art in the early ‘70s. Peter's latest exhibition - featuring historic sites from Southampton and the surrounding area - melds together his love of architecture and the more secret and hidden corners of the urban landscape.
Influenced by the many artists of the Romantic Period, including John Sell Cotman and Thomas Girtin, Peter says: “Hampshire has an abundance of fascinating architecture that goes back centuries. I’m drawn to quiet, out of sight areas and the old town of the city. One of Peter’s favourite images from his new exhibition is ‘Wreck on the River Itchen’, which was the result of his interest in weathered and decaying subject matter. “I find the mix of industry and nature around the docks and the waterfront fascinating subject matter. It’s such a shame that so many of these areas are not open to the public.” Peter is a lecturer, consultant and freelance artist and illustrator specialising in architectural representation for use in the publishing, advertising and building sectors.
He has been creating fine art watercolours and commissioned architectural illustrations for over 25 years. Since completing a Diploma in technical illustration at Ravensbourne College of Art in the early 70s he has practiced as an illustrator in advertising and publishing alongside teaching posts at Bournemouth, Ipswich and Southampton. He gained an MPhil from the Royal College of Art in Information Illustration in 1997 and has been practicing as a freelance architectural illustrator since 1984.
Peter runs workshops in architectural drawing and rendering in both the corporate environment as well as for the Campaign for Drawing’s Big Draw events. He currently teaches on the BA(Hons) Interior Design course at Southampton Solent University and is a Fellow and the Education Officer for the Society of Architectural Illustration (SAI) for which he served two years as President. His watercolours have been exhibited at venues throughout the UK including the Mall Galleries and Bankside Gallery in London as well as in Liverpool, Birmingham, Cambridge and Southampton. He also has work in private collections in the UK and abroad. Visit the artist's website at ... http://pjarvis.co.uk/
