Hong Kong.- The Karin Weber Gallery is pleased to present "Who Fights Fair? And the Evolution" by Yang Shewei from June 17th through July 12th, with an opening reception on Thursday June 16th. We are taught from childhood that it is honorable to fight fair, be it in games, sports, love or business. But life is not fair. Advantage and advancement over others becomes desirable and honor often goes out the window in the daily grind to make it. Amidst the the rapid development in China the vast majority of people deal with these conditions on a daily basis.
Another consequence of rapid change is the constant challenge on one's sense of self. To define who we are is a universal human need, but with the benchmarks constantly changing and shifting, we're left a little off-kilter and maybe not quite so comfortable in our own skins. Maybe that's why we grasp at things like astrology, or perhaps a totem animal.
In this much anticipated third solo exhibition in Hong Kong, Yang Shewei documents these internal struggles in exquisite ink, color and rice paper creations. In this series, Yang’s works have even taken up surreal quality, and while his brushstroke has become more gongbi, or refined, it has retained the expressive quality which is his trademark. Yang Shewei was born in Hunan province in China in 1971 and received his Master degree in Fine Arts in 2008 from Xu Beihong Art College of Renmin University. His works have been shown at Art Asia Miami and Art Singapore. The Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Guan Shanyue Art Museum and Lingnan Museum of Fine Art are among his institutional art collectors.
The gallery was founded in 1995 by German-born Karin Weber, who worked for more than 15 years in the antiques and art business in London. The gallery curates and introduces the work of emerging and established Asian and Western artists. “It is very important to us to maintain or reputation as an energetic, outgoing and accessible art gallery, to continue to inspire, interest and provide enjoyment and cultural enrichment to our collectors and the general public alike,” says Karin. The Gallery is dedicated to showing fine international contemporary art by both emerging and established artists, representing the taste of our Hong Kong and International clients. Exhibitions throughout the year introduce works by new artists, with regular representation from Burma. Many of our artists' works are in private and public collections worldwide. Karin Weber Gallery carries a comprehensive selection of works in oil, acrylic, watercolors, pastels, gouache, ink on paper and mixed media works.
