Los Angeles, CA.- The Avenue 50 Studio is proud to present "Glass Gourd Mosaic", on view at the gallery from July 9th until August 7th. Howard Swerdloff, artist and owner of Howeeduzzit Gallery, curates an exhibition of fine art glass, gourds and mosaic. Each artist chosen by Mr. Swerdloff, demonstrates their unique creative powers in a variety of forms and media. It is the artists’ desire to use these centuries-old crafts to elevate glass gourd and mosaic into fine art.
Glass making has a cloudy beginning. No one knows exactly when or where glass was first made, but it appears as far back as the second millennium BC in Egypt. The gourd’s history is similar in that the plant has been used for thousands of years – and a great many countries around the world. The method of incising and burning is still popularly used today. Mosaic is one of the oldest art forms known to mankind, beginning in the early culture of Ancient Mesopotamia. The artists featured in the exhibition include Leigh Adams, Pat Boyd, Angela Briggs, Judy & Larry Cunningham, Cathy Garcia, Tenny Lim, Luz Mack, Dawn Mendelson, Carole Choucair Oueijan, David Van Noppen, Howard Swerdloff, Zoe Topsfield and Stephen Woodruff.
Avenue 50 Studio, Inc. is an arts presentation organization grounded in Latin-Chican culture. Their monthly shows principally exhibit artists of color who display a high quality of work, and who have not been represented in mainstream galleries. They seek to build bridges of cultural understanding through artistic expressions. Using content-driven art to educate and to stimulate intercultural understanding, they build relationships and collaborations with artists and communities. Their eight year track record of over 80 shows in the Northeast LA area has ranged from international exchange exhibits to presenting Asian and African American artists in a largely Latino community. The art openings are a testament to the mix of cultures, national origins, and races that make up metro LA and our Highland Park neighborhood. They feel the showing of multicultural arts on a monthly basis in a working class community can go a long way in educating people to the importance of diverse art in our lives.

Along with this, Avenue 50 Studio is a center for cultural activities with workshops in art, spoken word and other creative forms of expression. Their community gathers around the exhibits, presentation of Latin-Chican films, and poetry readings. We are constantly evolving and our goal is to continue the exhibition and spoken word presentations. The Highland Park area of Los Angeles is an established community of long-term residents at the edges of middle class. It is primarily Latino of Mexican and Central American descent and bilingual in speech, signage and character. Avenue 50 Studio is committed to addressing the furthering of an established culture that is always evolving. Presenting the arts and artists of Mexico and Central America is at par with showcasing the arts and artists of Northeast LA and the greater Los Angeles area.
